The “Veritas” about Harvard…and Yale, and Princeton, and….

Thought-provoking article from the Chronicle of Higher Education. I think it’s right on the money…in every sense of that phrase.

The best pizza in the US?

GQ sent somebody around looking for it. Though I might trust their judgment a little more on matters of hair gel viscosity or length of beard stubble, both Sally’s and Pepe’s did make the list, which suggests it’s at least creditable. Notable omission: LA’s Pizzeria Mozza, which my wife swears by.

In Heaven Everything Is Fine

I’ve blogged about Peter Ivers before, the musician and provocateur who cut a legendary figure at late-60s Harvard, and was a confidant of Doug Kenney. I’d run across Peter in my reading every so often, and always suspected that there was an interesting story there. Now I know for sure thanks to a new bio, [...]

Owl Club manual FOUND

Ahh, to be young and smart and funny and at Harvard and heavily influenced by McSweeney’s…And yes, I smile as I say that. Legion is a great-looking blog that I’m going to be checking out, and forwarding to my friend Ed Park, because THESE ARE HIS PEOPLE. The young rascals have found the manual for [...]

Paul! Yale! Right on!

Ed over at Dullblog has posted the happy news that Yale has given Paul McCartney an honorary degree. I wonder if they’ll hit him up for money? “Your Class Dues, Mr. McCartney, cover the costs of your Alumni Magazine…”

Groucho Marx

Having caught a double-feature at the Aero last week, I was reminded how much I adore Groucho Marx. If you are similarly inclined–or simply “Groucho-curious” as they say in the personals–I highly recommend Stefan Kanfer’s bio. In the meantime, whet your appetite with this documentary from my one-time employer, WTTW.

St. Olaf vs. Carleton vs. Stutts

Carleton and St. Olaf’s, two top-notch liberal arts colleges in Northfield, MN, are betting on wind power. Carleton built their windmill in 2004; in the best spirit of collegiate rivalry, it was only a matter of time before St. Olaf’s did the same. These two schools are not the first to erect their own windmills [...]

Peter Ivers: ave atque vale

Dennis Perrin takes a break from the troubles of the world, here. In reading Dennis’ post, I was moved to find out a little more about someone he mentioned: Peter Ivers, the brilliant but ultimately somewhat troubled songwriter/performer/New Wave impresario. Ivers belonged to the coterie of folks who haunted Harvard in the late 60s, who [...]
