I respectfully disagree with the commenter above. I think a lot of us remember John, and have a special affection for him, because he explicitly used his celebrity to promote causes, many of which I myself believe in, and partly because JL helped me to see why they were worthy.

John was unafraid to appear the fool in the process. I remember seeing a clip of him interacting during his Montreal bed-in with professional cartoonist and full-time douche-nozzle Al Capp and Lennon's telling him, [paraphrasing] Don't you understand? I'm using the apparatus of advertising to promote peace! Even if on page 1 of the newspaper they make fun of silly John Lennon sitting in bed for peace, at least the word "peace" has appeared on page 1 of the newspaper.

You don't see that much. You didn't even see it from the other Beatles - not that level of risk-taking, anyway.

Yeah, right, not for the money. If not for the money, did they donate all proceeds to some cause? No, they pocketed it.

Some years ago I walked into an eyeglass store and saw a whole line of expensive John Lennon glasses. How ironic, since Lennon wore National Health glasses that are free.

Poor little Sean wants to keep his father in the public eye i.e. wants to keep himself in the public eye. If Sean and Yoko vaporized tomorrow (and nobody noticed) Lennon would still be Lennon.

Disagree about Elvis. Lennon was all about Lennon, as much as Elvis was about Elvis. His ideals were just as trite. We remember Lennon for his music with the Beatles mainly, not his naive politics and bullshit bed-ins.
